Portraits

For Robert portraits represent a progression from figures and are arguably the greatest challenge in art since every viewer of a portrait has been studying faces since birth - literally. With the capabilities of photography and of software for their manipulation, the challenge for artists is perhaps to capture the spirit of the individual, by exaggeration or exclusion for example. Worryingly, almost none of his portraits is posed or from photos but largely from memory alone - if that is a skill, he states that he has no idea where it came from.
